If you guessed C. Walnuts, you got it! 🎉
Among the nuts in this week’s Pantry Challenge almonds, cashews, walnuts, and pistachios walnuts stand out for their omega-3 content.
But what exactly does that mean? And what makes walnuts different from the other nuts in your pantry?
Let’s crack into the answer.
Â
What Kind of Omega-3s Are Found in Walnuts?
Walnuts naturally contain alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, a type of omega-3 fatty acid found in plant foods.
You don't need to remember the scientific name. The interesting part is simply that walnuts naturally contain ALA, which is what makes them stand out in this week's comparison.
Other nuts have their own unique nutritional profiles, but when comparing the four choices from our challenge, walnuts are the clear standout for omega-3s.

Walnuts vs. the Other Choices

So what about the other three answers?
Almonds are well known for their vitamin E content.
Cashews provide minerals including copper and magnesium.
Pistachios provide nutrients including vitamin B6 and potassium.
And walnuts are particularly notable for their ALA omega-3 content.
That's one of the fun things about keeping different nuts in the pantry: even though we group them together, their nutritional profiles aren't exactly the same.

How Much Is a Serving of Walnuts?
A standard serving of walnuts is about 1 ounce, or roughly 14 walnut halves.
Walnuts can be enjoyed straight from the package or easily added to everyday foods and recipes.
Try them:
- Mixed into oatmeal
- Added to granola
- Tossed into salads
- Chopped into baked goods
- Added to trail mix
- Sprinkled over yogurt
- Used in breads and muffins
Their rich, earthy flavor also works well in both sweet and savory recipes.

Here's Something Else You Might Not Know About Walnuts
The familiar brown shell isn't actually what you would see if you spotted a walnut growing on a tree.
While developing, a walnut is surrounded by a green outer husk. As the walnut matures, that outer husk eventually separates, revealing the hard shell underneath.
Inside that shell is the walnut kernel we eat.
So the journey looks something like this:
Walnut Tree → Green Husk → Hard Shell → Walnut Kernel
Not quite what you picture when you see a bag of walnuts in the pantry!
