The Halawy date is an excellent soft, semi-moist date. It is medium sized, light amber in color, soft and sweet, which is the meaning of the name. The first Halawy offshoots imported in commercial quantity arrived in 1913 from Barsa, Iraq. They are the second most numerous type of palms found in southern Iraq and are considered the best variety shipped from that area.
